Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art through her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for theater and art during the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay had a mother who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to make use of art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers that she spent in the state to stimulate her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English along with African American Studies. As studying, DuVernay was interested in creating in broadcast journalism. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of jurors. Her duties left her unhappy in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity sector. DuVernay was brought on straight out of college as an assistant publicist in one of the smaller studios. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. In addition, she started various promotion and lifestyle networks, such as her own Urban Beauty Collective.
